The red sauce topic (1972 views)

I have been trying ever since I arrived in Upstate New York to understand the appeal of the “red sauce place”. This is a neighborhood restaurant that serves a limited menu of Italian-American staples, and many people are passionate about their favorite local .. more

Yes. Slow Food, the Italy-based organization that believes we should pay more attention to what we put in our mouths, has a “consortium” right here in Saratoga Springs. There are at least two reasons to join up. First, Slow Food is passionate and active in pro .. more

My hunt for authentic Chinese food upstate (742 views)

I am one of those annoying city transplants who complains about the lack of “real” Chinese food in Saratoga. I’ve recently realized that my views are somewhat skewed by spending most of my adult life in Los Angeles and San Francisco, two cities with large .. more

The subs (as in submarine sandwiches) of Saratoga (203 views)

  1. Cupcake Lab is aspiring to be like Virgils, except they let you use your cell phone and computer. It's been open a fairly short time but had good traffic this lunchtime from people who seemed to be regulars. I had the cranberry tuna salad at $4.95; it was good and generous and came with a mini-cup of fruit cocktail and a pickle spear. Also tried a vanilla mini-cupcake topped with strawberry icing, nice way to end the meal for $1. Cupcake Lab is at the far north end of Broadway in the building that houses Roohan Realty. Not the most convenient location and you enter either from Long Alley (there is limited parking in the back) or by entering the office building and climbing up the stairs. It's worth making the trek to support these guys. Theplace will be especially cozy when winter comes.
