Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero makes her SPAC debut next week, performing on Tuesday, August 9 at the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival and on Thursday, August 11 with The Philadelphia Orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero.
The Chicago Tribune hails Gabriela Montero’s playing as “astonishingly brilliant.” Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Montero gave her first public performance at age 5 and made her concerto debut with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra at age 8. She is particularly noted for her unique improvisations, which have won her critical acclaim as well as a devoted following around the world. "When improvising, I connect to my audience in a completely unique way-and they connect with me," Montero said. "Because improvisation is such a huge part of who I am, it is the most natural and spontaneous way I can express myself."
The pianist has performed with major orchestras in the US and across the globe. In November 2008, Montero was invited to perform the specially commissioned Air and Simple Gifts alongside Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma and Anthony McGill at the Inauguration Ceremony of President Barack Obama.
