If you are in town as a tourist and want to act like a local, Compton's is a good place to start. Classic coffee shop fare in well worn surroundings, open from 3 am (go early and you are likely to see some drunken toffs tying off their night's revels) to 3 pm. There is an unexpected step as you go in and I think some of the locals like to sit in a booth facing the door to watch the tourists (and overindulgent partyers) stumble. Food is fine and fairly priced. The daily specials seem to get a bit more care in preparation than orders off the menu.

This is the stereotypical, hard-core "breakfast joint" -- and it's great! Combination diner with a stripped down menu, luncheonette, etc. What you see is what you get. It's dependable, reliable and this is the place to go if you want your "eggs, home fries, sausage, toast, coffee" and so on. Never had any other meal here except breakfast, and I love it.
