| Son of Rambow 7/24–25, 7/27 Thurs.–Fri., July 24th–25th, 8 p.m., Sun., July 27th, 7 p.m. Written and directed by Garth Jennings. Running time: 96 minutes. Country: France/UK/Germany. Year: 2007. Rated PG-13. Will Proudfoot (Bill Milner) and Lee Carter (Will Poulter) are 11 years old. Will is shy and lonely, a member of the Plymouth Brethren religious sect that shuns worldly distractions as television and movies. Lee, by contrast, is the class troublemaker, who spends more time in detention than in class. A chance encounter between the two leads to an unlikely friendship. When Will accidentally watches a pirated video of First Blood, he is imagines himself as the “son of Rambow” (the “w” was added for legal reasons, natch). Which is perfect, as Lee plans to make a movie to enter in a young filmmaker’s competition. He thus recruits Will as both actor and stunt man in a series of dangerous gags that could endanger Will’s young life—or at the very least cause conflict with his family’s religious beliefs. “Son of Rambow is an inventive and amusing coming-of-age movie that deftly entwines elements of farce and fantasy, rebelliousness and sentiment, while paying seriously funny tribute to the transcendent power of art” —Joe Leydon, Houston Chronicle. (Rated PG-13 for some violence and reckless behavior |
