Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
On April 6, 2010, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings released their fourth album together, “I Learned the Hard Way,” a powerful combination of soul, gospel and funk. Uniquely, this album was not recorded with the newest and best sound technology, but with a vintage Ampex eight-track tape machine. Their website describes, “The record drips with a warm and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax Records.”
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings choose to not use the digitally modern recording methods for their albums, but rather traditional analogue recording equipment. It is their purpose to capture the essence of funk and soul music that was at its peak during the mid-1960s and 1970s. Achieved successfully, “’I Learned the Hard Way’ is a celebration of, and a testament to, the soulful and beautiful possibilities of music.”
